Inside a Charter Bus: 7 Facts to Know About Charter Buses

Charter buses are a safe way to travel. It’s always good to know as much as possible, however, before you say, “Bon voyage!” Explore the following facts about charter buses to put your mind at ease.

1. There is a Bathroom

First and foremost, there is a bathroom on board! Charter buses all come equipped with a bathroom facility including a sink.

You’ll likely be traveling for hours at a time so it’s good to know that you won’t have to hold it. Bus drivers and group leaders, however, do plan regular bathroom breaks.

While the bathroom is available to you, it only gets emptied at the end of each trip. Keep this in mind when deciding whether or not to use the facility. Since you’ll be traveling with other passengers, it’s best to keep things as fresh as possible.

In any case, don’t hesitate to use the restroom as needed and especially in emergency situations. That’s what it’s there for!

Bathrooms are usually at the back of the bus. So, plan your seating accordingly if you want to be near the restroom.

2. Packing and Storage

All bags will be stored underneath the bus for the duration of the trip. When packing your main suitcase aim to pack as lightly as possible. A small to medium-sized suitcase should do the trick!

If there are items you wish to have with you on board, pack a small separate bag. This bag needs to be able to fit in your lap or underneath your seat. In some cases, overhead storage is available but ask in advance to avoid overpacking.

Your trip won’t be comfortable if your bag is too hefty to sit nicely on your lap. To avoid overpacking a carryon, only carry with you items that are absolutely essential.

3. Safety First

Buses are a safe mode of transportation. But, it’s important also follow safety precautions.

Always listen to the directions of the bus driver. They know their buses better than anyone and they want to keep everyone safe.

As a rule of thumb, remain seated while the bus is in motion. If you need to use the restroom or get up, try to find a low-traffic time to do so. Traffic causes abrupt stops and this could cause you to fall or lose your footing.

If you did fall, you could also be putting others’ safety at risk. It’s possible that you could accidentally fall or collide with someone unexpectedly.

When in doubt, remain seated. Always listen to the bus driver and you’ll do just fine!

4. Listen to Leaders

It’s important to listen to your leader’s instructions. Leaders will be speaking directly with the bus driver frequently. So, when the leader instructs you to do something, understand that the bus driver could be the source of this communication.

Listen to leaders when determining when to return to the bus. Charter buses make regular stops and it’s important to be on time when returning. If you’re late because of a miscommunication, then the whole bus tour is delayed.

Leaders will also inform you where to return to the bus. The dropoff location isn’t always the same as the pickup location. If you need to, write this information down in your phone or double check with the leader as you exit the bus.

It’s also a great idea to take a picture of the bus and the bus number. In tourist locations, it’s possible that your bus will look similar to other charter buses. Knowing the number can help you to easily find your charter bus on time.

It’s better to ask questions and get clarity than be late and/or lost.

5. Entertainment

Most charter buses are equipped with a TV and a DVD player. Bus drivers likely won’t have a DVD for everyone to watch but do welcome passengers bringing their own.

Keep in mind that individuals in the group have a variety of tastes. When selecting a movie to bring, choose wholesome, family-oriented entertainment. While you may love horror films, some of the passengers may find this offensive.

Another factor to keep in mind is the age appropriateness of the film. There may be young passengers on board, so aim for a G-rated or PG movie. Films like Inside Out, Ice Age, and High School Musical are great options.

If you prefer watching TV shows or a movie on your own device, make sure that it’s suitable for others to see, too. Folks can easily see your device’s screen so keeping it G-rated on your device is also necessary. If you decide to take this route, make sure you have headphones so you don’t disturb other passengers.

6. Snacks

Bring along snacks with you that are easy to clean up. Messy snacks easily translate to a messy charter bus. While it’s tempting to snack on a leftover burrito, without a plate this could get too messy!

7. Clean Up

Trash cans are located at the front of every charter bus near the bus driver. Throw away any trash as you exit the bus.

Take all of your items with you when your bus tour is over. Double check your seating area for any trash or items you may have left.

As you exit the bus, also make sure to say “thank you” to your best driver for an amazing and safe charter bus tour!
